Factors important to medical residency program directors and their interview criteria:

In an article presented at 2002 NRSA Trainees Research Conference
[1], the presenters had surveyed Family Practice Program directors and this is what they found for Criteria for interview:

          Passing USMLE scores (92%)
Letters of recommendation from a U.S. experience (64%)

Current observer experience in U.S. (55%)
          USMLE scores above 80% (46%)
          Current residency experience in U.S.(40%)

In another article titled "Factors Influencing
Internal Medicine Program Directors' Decisions about Applicants" in Academic Medicine[2] the authors say program directors rated the following items as highly or moderately useful for interview decisions:

          USMLE scores (94%),
          Dean's letters (87%),
          Transcripts and application forms (85%),
